Natural Resources Management (NRM)
Winrock International India's
(WII's) Natural Resources Management Program
offers innovative management systems that will help
in the efficient utilization and conservation of India's
natural resources, especially water bodies and forests.
The expertise of WII's staff, developed over years of
working with various stakeholders — rural communities,
local and national NGOs, and the Government —
is utilized for technical assistance, capacity building
at various levels, and sector strategy and policy reviews
in issues related to water and forest management in
India. The NRM group works with policy-makers, foresters,
scientists, research institutions, non-governmental
organizations, and rural communities in several states,
lending its expertise in myriad ways. Specifically,
the strengths are in:
- Capacity building of institutions, organizations and individuals, including Human Resource Development and Manpower Planning in participatory resource management systems
- Assistance to NGOs and research institutions in project management
- Providing leadership to groups of foresters, NGOs, academics, researchers and other practitioners for coordinated participation in international forums and conferences
- Organizing exchange programs with professionals from other developing countries to share and learn about participatory resource management
- Technical assistance in forest science as well as socio-institutional issues in multiple-use resource management
- Developing location-specific models of resource management including watershed development approaches
- Organizing debates and discussions on policy issues and their documentation
- Sector strategy research
- Project evaluation and impact assessment
- Publications and information dissemination
- Networking
All year round, RUPFOR and WRU, NRM's two specialized units, organize a number of activities in forestry and water management. This apart, the NRM Program has initiated a Lecture Series in forestry jointly with the Commonwealth Forestry Association (CFA)-India. Eminent persons in the area of forestry are invited to talk on burning issues in forestry management.
