Small Grants in water and forestry were given to grantees who contributed to any area of natural resources management, through a variety of ways – research, documenting through films, traveling on exchange visits, or presenting papers at conferences. Small Grants also supported studies with a focus on environmental justice and those processes that would lead to creating networks in joint forestry management. As a part of the Small Grants project, WII organized public lectures on important themes. It encouraged sharing of experience through exchange visits. During the project period, a diverse set of subject areas through over 90 sub-grants in the areas of biodiversity conservation, joint forest management, organizing water-user associations, etc, were covered. Lectures and discussions were held on the report of the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development (WAFTS), in which eminent speakers deliberated. Under this project, a Winrock International India-Ford Book Series on contemporary forestry presenting innovations and recent developments in participatory forest management and conservation was initiated to document experiences of foresters, forest dwellers and voluntary organizations whose joint efforts are responsible for ushering in needed changes in tropical forest management. An associated monograph series covering analytical work by researchers was also produced which provided further impetus to the process of change.
