Winrock International India (WII) carried out a study to improve and spread understanding of how Small and Medium Forestry Enterprise (SMFE) associations can work for the poor. In India, there is limited knowledge and awareness of current extent and roles of these associations. This project addressed this issue by bringing together scattered information and analyzed it in terms of key characteristics of association. This project builds on an earlier scoping work and feeds into a wider international project on this topic.

The main output of this project will be an analytical paper investigating the following:

  1. What leads SMFE associations to form?
  2. What are their stated and actual functions?
  3. Who do they serve?
  4. How resilient are they?
  5. Do they distribute costs and benefits among the members fairly?
  6. What is their potential for supporting sustainable forest management and livelihoods of the poor?
  7. What is needed to achieve that potential?
