Winrock International India (WII) and Institute for Social and Environmental Transition (ISET, US) jointly organized an International Conference on Adaptation to Climatic Variability and Change: Sharing insights from US, India and other parts of the World, with support from US Environmental Protection Agency, during January 5-7, 2006 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. This conference was part of US-India bilateral co-operation and hosted in partnership with US EPA.
The conference had three core objectives:
- To increase dialogue and understanding regarding emerging adaptation issues and the approaches and activities currently being undertaken respond to them. Within this particular aim, attention was paid to issues related to:
- Opportunities for climate risk reduction in the context of post-disaster reconstruction activities such as those following the Asian Tsunami and those that will follow Hurricane Katrina in the US;
- Climate risk and adaptation within the water sector where most direct impacts of change are likely to occur; and
- Long-term adaptation issues in agricultural and agriculturally linked economic systems.
- To identify critical areas where research or pilot implementation activities are needed that would support the development of policies or programs capable designed to enhance adaptive capacity;
- To establish links between government, NGO, academic and other groups working on questions of adaptation as a basis for further cooperation in the future.
