Solar technology as a power producing option is gradually gaining ground worldwide including India. There are quite a few reasons for such an encouraging change. Developing countries especially have little experience with the field operation of megawatt capacity power plants. That is precisely the reason for foreign investors / companies to associate themselves in the task of creating these plants and thus get exposed to the business environment too from several key considerations. It is equally beneficial for the local companies to know the complexities of setting up large capacity power generating systems at various levels. New business initiatives are being explored in this area with many foreign companies interested in entering the Indian solar energy marketplace.
Objectives
The main objective of the study was to come out with a consolidated report on the current status of the solar technology programs being conducted by various ministries in India.
Achievements
The present study on solar power generating system in India was undertaken in two parts. Part-I of this study dealt with a general assessment of the states accompanied by power situation and markets served at present through solar energy use. Part-II involved the field visits to two most prospective states (Rajasthan and Gujarat) in tandem with existing policy and incentive structure etc. An attempt was made to seek the opinion of relevant stakeholders who have been actively related to an overall development of the solar energy industry/market in the country.
