Increased access to electricity in rural areas is crucial for economic development of Cambodia. Access to electricity has a direct bearing on development and creation of some of the other crucial facilities and infrastructure having direct implications on the quality of life and income generation opportunities.
To overcome the various barriers and to expand the role of renewable energy in providing electricity services to the rural areas, the Royal Government of Cambodia, in collaboration with the World Bank is preparing to implement a renewable energy project as part of a larger rural energy rural electrification and transmission project beginning from year 2001. WII completed the overview, barrier identification and GEF component design in 2000. The project got completed in May 2002.
WII is facilitated the consolidation of current initiatives for private sector participation and commercialization that would lead to increased access to electricity, improved sector efficiency, reduction in electricity costs, and removal of infrastructure bottlenecks.
WII was involved in the:

  1. Development of a framework for a time-bound Renewable Energy Action Plan
  2. Development of a framework for setting up a Renewable energy Assistance Fund
  3. Pipeline development for mini-grid projects based on small and mini hydro sources
  4. Market study leading to pipeline development for isolated solar PV projects
  5. Development of Standard Small Power Purchase Agreement

Overseeing the implementation of the Renewable Energy Action Plan, and formulation of the Renewable Energy Policy for Cambodia. All objectives under Project Activities were met.
