Under the USAID’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Prevention’s Alternative Bagasse Cogeneration (GEP-ABC) project, WII organized a few residential in-plant training programs for middle management of sugar mill professionals on bagasse-based cogeneration at select sugar mills for both existing and prospective cogenerators.

The training program at Godavari Sugars was organized from February 25-27, 2004 at GSML, Sameerwadi, Karnataka - a fairly new plant and an ex-GEP-ABC grantee, whose cogeneration project was monitored by Winrock International India during 1999 and 2003 under GEP-ABC.

The objective of this in-plant training program was to:

  • Introduce the technical staff of sugar mills, especially from existing cogeneration plants, to opportunities for optimizing energy and plant performance, and
  • Introduce prospective cogenerators to the various technical issues concerning selection of cogeneration technology and project development.

The course provided an opportunity to review, refresh, enhance one’s knowledge, and learn about the latest technologies in the above-mentioned areas to help solve specific problems of the mills and thus improve performance. It also provided an opportunity to interact, learn from the faculty and from each other, and implement the techniques immediately following the training.
The program was customized to address the specific needs of participants. Special emphasis was laid on enabling smooth and trouble-free operation of equipment, reducing downtime/breakdown hours of equipment, bringing down O&M costs, upgrading technical skills and ensuring safety of operations, raising awareness of various project development issues and facilitating exchange of experiences with other participants.

Both classroom sessions and site visits were conducted.
