A capacity building workshop on greenhouse gas (GHG) project development in the Indian transport sector was conducted at Taj Lands End, Mumbai on June 15-16, 2005, jointly by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), U.S. Department of Energy (USDoE), the United States Asia Environmental Partnership (USAEP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Science Applications International Co-operation (SAIC), and Winrock International India (WII). The objective of the workshop was to build capacity among the stakeholders in India on the methods for estimating and accounting GHG emissions and reductions. Experts from energy, environment, and financial fields discussed the potential to develop GHG projects in India’s transport sector. A variety of fuels and technologies, such as LPG, CNG, biodiesel, hybrid-electric and conversions were discussed.

This two-day workshop benefited Indian stakeholders involved in promoting alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), including industry representatives, such as oil and gas companies and auto manufacturers, municipal governments, and transport and pollution control authorities. On Day 1, the discussions focused on India’s transport sector in the emerging international GHG market, and how Indian companies and organizations in the transport sector can benefit from developing GHG projects. On Day 2, training on quantifying emissions and sample baseline scenarios were conducted. The workshop was attended by over 60 participants.
