Prototype Carbon Fund (PCF), the World Bank, promotes projects that achieve GHG reduction. This particular project was aimed under PCF at accessing funds for sale of GHG reduction from the project.

Thiru Arooran Sugars Group (TASG) owns and operates four sugar plants located at Tirumandankudi (TMK-I and TMK-II), A Chitoor, Pennadam and Kottur in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Each plant operates cogeneration facilities, which burn sugar bagasse during the sugar cane crushing season to produce steam and electricity for self-consumption. During the off-season, only the high efficiency facilities at TMK-I and A Chitoor are operational, using coal and lignite as fuel input. The objective of the project was to generate excess electricity through cogeneration to be delivered to the local grid and reduce fossil fuel consumption through substituting agro-biomass for conventional fuels.

WII carried out the preparation of the required documentations of PIN, baseline study, MVP, and the PDD, which were submitted to PCF.

PCF has given in-principle acceptance to procure the CO2 reductions generated by the proposed project. The PDD prepared for the project has been submitted to the Meth Panel and is available on the UNFCCC web site.
