Background
India is one of the major oil importing countries in Asia and therefore, biofuels has become an important alternative to fossil fuels. India is developing a policy to promote and develop biofuels in the country in a sustainable way. However, in spite of several scattered efforts to produce biofuels, the country is still lagging in terms of implementation and development activities. Moreover, there are serious concerns that 1st generation biofuels produced without sufficient consideration of environment and societal impacts, could be counterproductive. This study aims to investigate the actual situation of biofuels in India, which appears to be significantly different from the scenario projected by the government. The work will assist IGES researchers to collect, compile and synthesize the required data which includes but not limited to current biofuel policies of the country, biofuel market data including production and consumption data, biofuel refining and technology related information and also various social and environmental issues arising out of biofuel development activities in the country for the further analysis and also produce a country review paper on India’s biofuel policies and implementation.

Objectives
The objective was to investigate the actual situation of biofuels in India.

Achievements

The project team had interactions with several stakeholders and had collected primary and secondary information. Based on this and WII’s past project experience, the report was prepared and submitted to IGES.
