Background
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), in its bid to promote energy efficiency and cleaner power alternatives, initiated the Solar Cities initiative across India. The program aims to transform, over the next 5 years, 60 major cities in India into model cities for energy conservation and for the use of renewable energy (RE) alternatives. This is aimed to be achieved by targeting a 10 percent reduction in the cities’ energy consumption through energy efficiency measures and installation of renewable energy systems.
Objective
Taking a combination of inputs gained during both the primary and secondary research, WII arrived at the projection of energy supply, consumption and associated emissions. Various statistical tools were used to analyze the data and accordingly, an action plan was prepared for a time bound realization of the MNRE objectives in this regard. Specifically coherent energy planning of the city was done through year-wise targets for energy conservation, renewable energy addition and GHG abatement along with an action plan for implementation of the same. The Master Plan, successfully submitted to MNRE once approved will be implemented over a period of five years.
Activities
WII was entrusted with drawing up an energy reduction master plan for the city of Dehradun. During the project’s six month duration, the major activities carried out included: Identifying scope of energy conservation sector-wise. Potential deployment of RE technologies. Areas for GHG emission abatement. Deciding modalities for setting up of “Solar City Cell”. |
