Winrock International India (WII) is undertaking an action learning exercise to demonstrate the relevance and potential of incentive-based mechanisms for watershed services and improving livelihoods in India, in collaboration with the International Institute of Environment and Development (IIED), London.
The project is being implemented at two sites:
- Changer area of Himachal Pradesh (Partner agency: Himachal Pradesh Eco-development Society)
- Bhoj wetlands, Madhya Pradesh (Partner agency: Madhya Pradesh Lake Conservation Authority)
As part of the project, efforts are being made to develop incentive based mechanisms to facilitate transaction between upland service providers and downstream beneficiaries.
A number of site-specific and broader studies are also being carried out to assess the impact of the mechanism on watershed service and livelihoods. A communications exercise was also undertaken to raise awareness about conserving the Bhoj wetlands in Bhopal city.
