Agricultural Water Initiative: Winrock International India (WII) is undertaking a pilot project on ‘Agricultural Water Initiative’ in collaboration with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), USA on exploring improved agricultural water management practices in sugarcane cultivation. The purpose of this project is to examine existing farmer management practices, supplement it with improved water management practices and create a tool that can be used to evaluate water management activities. The rationale for this project is that with the continuing depletion and degradation of surface and ground water, sugarcane cultivators will almost certainly face higher prices for water in the future which will result in higher prices further up in the supply chain. Further, increasing water scarcity could lead to more and more farmers abandoning the cultivation of water-intensive crops, such as sugarcane. Given this, this pilot project seeks to examine low-cost, water efficient methods for sugarcane cultivation through research on existing and improved practices.
