The major energy sources in the plant are coal, diesel and electricity. Coal is used to generate steam in the boilers while electricity is used to drive the motors apart from lighting. The electricity is obtained from grid and plant has DG sets which are operated continuously to meet the demand of the plant in addition to grid power. The following table gives the consumption of energy for the period Nov 2005-April 2006.

The salient features of the plant are:
- Connected load : 4500 kW
- Peak Operating load : 3500 kW during Feb-July
- Off peak operating load : 3000 kW (Aug-Jan)
- Contract demand : 2100 kVA
- Maximum Demand : 1540 kVA
- Average power factor : 0.99
The overall objective of the proposed study at M/s KS Oils Limited will be to identify, prioritize, and recommend a set of cost-effective energy conservation schemes, which would reduce the overall specific consumption of electricity and fuels in the plant without effecting the production or quality of products. Implementation of the above suggested measures must lead to improved energy efficiency and reduce specific energy cost of production and a net increase in profitability.
ACTIVITIES
The energy audit would cover all the energy intensive systems/equipments installed in the plant. During the audit, the ongoing process would be taken care of & all the recommendations would be analyzed based on the intensity of the energy consumed at that point of time taking into consideration the process in totality. Since both electrical & thermal sources of energy are being used in KS Oils Ltd., the energy audit would focus on the study of major energy consuming equipments to evaluate their operational efficiency/performance from the energy conservation point of view & would cover the following:
- Compressed air system
- Water Pumping Systems and cooling towers
- Thermic Fluid Heaters
- Steam System (Steam Generation, Distribution & Utilization)
- Furnaces
- Transformers
- Power factor and demand management
- Electric motors
- Fans & Blowers
- Lighting
- DG sets
Project Status
Winrock International India India shall commence the energy audit at KS Oils, in the month of December 2006. Winrock International India India proposes to conduct the entire study in two phases.
Phase No. 1
The Solvent Extraction Plant will be processing Soybean in the month of December 2006 & operating at full load. In order to accrue the maximum benefits out of the proposed energy audit, it would be best to carry out the study under full loading conditions.
Phase No. 2
The Solvent Extraction Plant on Oil Cake, all the expellers plants, Kacchi Ghani Plants, Oil Refinery, Vanaspati Plants, Tin Manufacturing Plant, Jar Manufacturing Plant and Pet Bottles Manufacturing Plant will be running at full capacity in the months of April/May. Winrock International India India shall take up the study for the same in the month of April/May 2007 so as to get the maximum benefit out of the study.
During each phase data shall be collected pertaining to historical energy consumption, equipment specification, production details etc. Field measurements shall be carried out & performance of various equipments & systems assessed. After each phase, a progress report shall be submitted to KS Oils & after the complete study is over a draft report shall be prepared which will be vetted for final approval from the plant management & final report submitted, which will recommend & describe out various energy conservation measures in ready to implement form. The first field visit shall be undertaken from 4th December 2006 to 16th December 2006.
