Objectives
Petrochemical project of GAIL (India) Ltd. is a large scale integrated grass-root petrochemical plant located at Pata, near Auraiya district in UP on Kanpur-Agra national highway. The plant processes natural gas to produce major products such as LPG, Propane, HDPE & LLDPE.

The overall objective of the proposed study at GAIL (India) Ltd., Pata, UP is as follows:

• To conduct energy audit on all the important systems & major energy guzzlers so as to identify potential areas where energy can be saved in any form with or without investment.
• To prioritize the potential energy saving areas depending upon envisaged savings, investment cost, time for execution, and payback period etc.
• To carry out the feasibility study of installing VSD’s in fans/compressor/pumps etc.

Activities
The energy audit would cover all the energy intensive systems/equipments installed in all the plants, viz. gas sweetening unit, gas processing unit, gas cracker, LPG, HDPE, LLDPE & Butene-1. During the audit, the ongoing process would be taken care of & all the recommendations would be analyzed based on the intensity of the energy consumed at that point of time taking into consideration the process in totality. Since both electrical & thermal sources of energy, in the form of purchased/self generated electrical power & natural gas respectively, are being used in GAIL PATA, the energy audit would focus on the study of major energy consuming equipments to evaluate their operational efficiency/performance from the energy conservation point of view & would cover the following:

• Transformers
• Power factor and demand management
• Motive loads
• Air & Nitrogen compressor
• DG Sets
• Lighting System
• Boiler Operation
• Steam Distribution Net work
• Waste heat recovery boilers
• Condensate recovery
• Furnace/Ovens operations
• Steam Turbine & Driven Machine
• Gas Turbine driven compressor in the gas processing unit
• Nitrogen Compressor
• Water Pumping Systems and cooling towers

Project Status
Winrock International India India shall commence the energy audit at GAIL Pata, U.P. on the 4th of December 2006. Winrock International India India proposes to conduct the entire study in two phases. During each phase data shall be collected pertaining to historical energy consumption, equipment specification, production details etc. Field measurements shall be carried out & performance of various equipments & systems assessed. After each phase, a progress report shall be submitted to GAIL & after the complete study is over a draft report shall be prepared which will be vetted for final approval from the plant management & final report submitted, which will recommend & describe out various energy conservation measures in ready to implement form. The first field visit shall be undertaken from 4th December 2006 to 16th December 2006.
