To demonstrate the concept of energy pooling, with the overall objective of addressing the issues of energy conservation, local environmental improvement, and the greenhouse gas emissions from the Indian industrial sector.

The proposed intervention is an innovative attempt to popularize the concept of energy pooling in India. Since long, the energy pooling concept is being discussed in India, which basically means utilizing the waste heat from one industrial unit to provide/augment the thermal energy needs of a neighbouring unit.

As a pilot project, the intervention would be carried out in the Ferozabad glass industry cluster to demonstrate the concept, which can then be applied to other potential sites, not only in India, but also in other developing countries, where there is industrial clustering.

Major activities:

  • Energy audit and green house gas inventorisation of the units
  • Technical feasibility studies
  • System design and financial engineering
  • Selection of the demonstration site
  • Commissioning and fine tuning of the demonstration plant
  • Post implementation audit to quantify energy / CO2 saving.
  • Workshops / policy discussion forums and preparation of action plan for dissemination and replication
