Background
Hydro projects are affected by high rates of siltation from their catchments and are required to prepare and fund a Catchment Area Treatment (CAT) plan. Himachal Pradesh has introduced a requirement that 10% of the CAT plan funds should be utilized for making PES, in the catchments.
Objective
The specific objective of this project was to scope the feasibility for implementing incentive based mechanisms, a broader form of payments for environmental services and identify enabling factors so that wider implementation can likely lead to improved environmental services of erosion control and reduced siltation and better livelihoods outcomes. The study area for the project was the Giri river catchment in Himachal Pradesh above the proposed Renuka Dam. |
