Background
Kerala being one of the states in India with high population density along with unplanned urban growth has created collection an disposal of Solid waste a major problem. Perishable nature of these wastes coupled with high moisture content promotes natural decomposition. This leads to emission of obnoxious odours and gases like methane, carbon dioxide which are potential greenhouse gases. The organic content of the wastes provide an ideal medium for vector and pest breeding. Dumping of MSW poses a threat to the environment and the public health. Traditional approaches to solve these problems have proved to be ineffective and non-sustainable especially in the present climate scenarios prevailing in the state (increase in number of rain days). Hence a new technical involvement and concerted effort is needed for a proper and scientific waste management programme in Kerala.
Objective
The project aims to establish a pilot plant for Biomethanation of Solid Waste along with electricity generation with an expected installed capacity of 1 MW. The project also will be a model of Public-Private collaboration in the Kerala Solid Waste Management sector. Major objectives are to carry out technical and field studies for the technology selection and carry out primary technical designs, interact with the different Government agencies and support the client to establish the pilot project by fulfilling the norms of the state Government.
Achievements
Detailed project plant has been developed along with the primary technical design of the biomethanation plant. The project has been submitted to the approval of the Government of Kerala. |
